As the non-fungible token, or NFT, craze continues, more and more massive names are getting involved. However, one of the biggest seems to be happening as we speak. According to a letter from its CEO, Susan Wojcicki, YouTube may be the next big brand to take part in the metaverse. Here’s what’s going on:

YouTube May Dive Into NFTs

As mentioned above, a letter from YouTube’s CEO suggests that the company may be diving into NFTs. Ultimately, the goal seems to be to help creators earn extra money.

As is expected, no concrete plans were shared in the letter. It also didn’t mention when YouTube might begin the process to bring NFT capabilities to its website. However, the CEO did explain that innovations taking place in the metaverse are a source of inspiration to continue innovating on YouTube.

In the letter, Wojcicki said:

“The past year in the world of crypto, nonfungible tokens (NFTs), and even decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs) has highlighted a previously unimaginable opportunity to grow the connection between creators and their fans.

We’re always focused on expanding the YouTube ecosystem to help creators capitalize on emerging technologies, including things like NFTs, while continuing to strengthen and enhance the experiences creators and fans have on YouTube.”

How Might YouTube Integrate NFTs?

YouTube is an innovator, a pioneer, and an expert in providing compelling features to consumers and creators alike. So, there’s no telling exactly how the company might incorporate NFTs into their product. However, there are some potential options that may prove to be low-hanging fruit.

For example, YouTube already offers a merch shelf, an area under videos where creators can feature products like apparel, collectibles, plushies, records, and more through a massive list of retail partners.

There’s no reason the company couldn’t partner with NFT platforms to integrate crypto technologies and wallets into this shelf, giving creators the ability to feature their own NFTs for sale on the shelf.

Why Is YouTube Considering NFTs?

We know from the letter that the main reason for NFTs, according to the CEO of the company, is to drive revenue for creators. However, there’s likely quite a bit more to it than that.

Many argue that Web3 and NFTs are the way of the future, and I happen to agree. This technology gives consumers the ability to own digital assets like never before, and asset creators a way to connect with consumers that has never been available.

As the technology continues to grow, early adopters will be the big winners. So, it only makes sense that a tech company aimed at entertaining consumers while rewarding creators would get in on the trend early.

Ultimately, YouTube is, and wants to stay, ahead of the curve.

The Bottom Line

The bottom line here is simple. YouTube, one of the world’s pioneers in streaming entertainment, seems to be jumping into the NFT space soon. This signifies yet another point of inflection when it comes to the fact that NFTs are here to stay, and have the potential to change the entertainment industry as we know it. All in all, this is great news for the metaverse and the community it’s centered around.
