Spider-Man is one of the most popular brands in comic book character history. If you’re like most middle-aged, or younger, Americans, you can remember sitting in front of a television screen or going to a movie theater to watch the latest and greatest movie depicting a nerdy young man by the name of Peter Parker that gets bit by a spider and develops super-human abilities.
The movie is such a classic that, according to Google, more than 20 main-stream actors have played the character on the big screen.
As you could imagine, over the decades since the super hero’s first appearance in 1962, the Spider-Man franchise has pushed the limits of technology in comic books, movies, games, and more. Now, those limits are being pushed yet again as the web-slinging superhero makes his way into the metaverse with the first launch of non-fungible tokens depicting the character.
AMC to Give Spider-Man NFTs Away for FREE!
AMC, the largest movie theater chain in the world, is yet another that’s known for pushing the limits of technology and bringing the latest and greatest of tech to its customers. The company was one of the first theater chains to launch a digital rewards program among several other firsts. In fact, as recently as August, AMC became the first movie theater chain to announce that it would accept popular cryptocurrencies, like Bitcoin, as a form of payment.
So, it’s not surprising to learn that AMC has teamed up with Sony Pictures, another company known for pushing the limits of technology in entertainment, to launch the first ever Spider-Man NFTs.
All told, the two will be offering 86,000 NFTs to AMC Stubs Premiere, AMC Stubs A-List, and AMC Investor Connect members. However, there’s a bit of a caveat. In order to get your hands on one of these collectibles, you’ll have to order tickets for the December 16th opening of “Spider-Man: No Way Home” in advance.
In the announcement, AMC said it’s also partnered with Cub Studios to develop more than 100 NFT designs that will be available through the event.
How to Get Your Hands on the First Spider-Man NFTS
As mentioned above, the NFTs in the collection will be offered only to AMC Stubs Premiere, AMC Stubs A-List, and AMC Investor Connect members. So, if you’re not a member of one of these programs, you’ll need to sign up. The lowest cost of the three options is AMC Stubs A-List, a membership that you can grab for just $0.99 for the first month here.
Once you’ve become a member of one of the three programs above, you’ll need to purchase a ticket to watch the December 16th opening of “Spider-Man: No Way Home” prior to the opening of the email. Tickets for the movie started selling today.
Once you purchase your tickets, a waiting game ensues. Those who qualify to receive a Spider-Man NFT will receive an email with redemption instructions on December 22, 2021. From there, you must take the steps to redeem your token by no later than March 1, 2021. Should you wait too long, you will no longer have access to the NFT.
Keep the Limited Quantity in Mind
One of the most exciting things about NFT drops like this is the fact that the collectibles come with limited availability, and as the law of supply and demand suggests, when supply is limited, prices go up.
However, it’s also important to keep in mind that we’re not talking about a project surrounding a character that nobody’s ever heard of before. No, we’re talking about a project surrounding a character that’s become a fan favorite over the course of decades.
As such, the movie alone is expected to drive significant demand for preorders. Adding the free NFT that comes to members of the programs listed above will only increase the demand for the movie, and pre-ordered tickets.
On the other hand, there are only 86,000 NFTs being created for the collection, and while that may seem like a pretty big number, I’ve seen 10,000 tokens from lesser-known collections sell out in a matter of seconds. So, it’s far from inconceivable that the 86,000 Spider-Man NFTs will go quickly.
With that said, if you want to get your hands on one of these collectibles, you’ll want to act fast. The earlier you order your tickets, the better your chances of owning one of the first non-fungible tokens from the Spider-Man franchise.
More AMC NFTs to Come
AMC recently announced that it would be entering into the NFT industry, and it’s happening for good reason. Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the company has been struggling to fill seats. Through the launch of NFTs, the company has found a low-cost way to drive further excitement surrounding blockbuster films, a move that’s likely to greatly improve the viewership of movies shown in AMC theaters.
With that said, I’d be shocked if Spider-Man NFTs was where the company started and ended in the industry. Moving forward, I’m expecting to see more and more digital asset launches alongside hit movies. So, if you’re not quick enough to get your hands on a piece from this collection, there will likely be more to look forward to ahead.
The Bottom Line
The bottom line here is two-fold. First and foremost, Spider-Man fans have a big opportunity ahead. Not only is there a new movie from the franchise hitting the tape, fans will be able to get their hands on exclusive NFTs that are in short supply. That’s exciting in and of itself.
However, the second part of the bottom line is icing on the cake. The fact that AMC is making a push, using digital collectibles as a way to drive interest in blockbuster movies is yet another example of the utility of these collectibles. All told, this is exciting news for all blockchain enthusiasts, whether you’re into Spider-Man or not.
